Session 3 Developing and Documenting the Concept or Theme

Over the next couple of weeks, you will be working in your groups to address the first element of the unit:

1 Establish scope of public programs

1.1 Identify activities, events or public programs that meet current or future organisational priorities and policies

1.2 Evaluate external influences that may impact development of programs

1.3 Research customer needs, current development initiatives and wider community needs

1.4 Establish educational, interpretive and commercial objectives in consultation with appropriate stakeholders

Developing a concept

Once you made the decision to run a particular program or event, you need to start planning the event. This includes developing a storyline or theme, determining your target audience, and taking into account any cultural or environmental protocols that may be relevant.

What is a storyline?

A storyline is a plan or summary of what a "story" is about. It helps you to develop your story by organising the plot and the sequence of events will take place.

What are interpretive messages?

Interpretive messages provide an explanation about a display or event. They need to be clear and readable. More information on interpretive themes and messages can be found here: https://www.heritagedestination.com/hdc-library---interpretation-themes/

What is meant by a theme?

The theme is the main message or idea that the writer is trying to convey. This can relate to a story or book, but can also relate to any activity or event.

Brainstorming

Brainstorming is where a group of people write down any idea that comes into their head on a given topic. With brainstorming, the premise is that anything goes - there is no such thing as a bad idea. Once all of the ideas are written down, you can work through them and dismiss those that, for whatever reason, are not practical.

Class Activity 1

In small groups, decide on a storyline, interpretive message and/or theme for the following real event examples:

Beauty DIY Workshop

Future Climate and Food in Victoria

CoderDojo coding club for children

Science Week pre-school storytime

Understanding your Utilities

Science Fair (for Science Week)

The Changing Face of Victoria (exhibition)

Gambling - The impact on Family

What do you think Cultural Awareness is about? What do you know about other cultures?

Would any of our students that have different cultural backgrounds like to add to the conversation?

Environmental Considerations
