Session 2 Community needs, Objectives, and external influences
Customer and Community Needs
Libraries, and public libraries in particular, are there to provide a service to their customers and communities.Who could be classified as a customer?
Customers of a public or community library include:- Local schools and community groups
- Local community members
- People who work or go to school in the area
- Tourists and visitors to the area
Can you think of any other individuals or groups that could be considered a customer of a public library?
Read the following articles about the role of libraries in the community

This is a whole website, which I am sure many of you have already seen, but the section that is relevant for this class starts with Libraries Are:

Class Activity 1
From the articles above, what were some of the points that you found interesting?
Why are libraries important? Why are the programs at libraries important?
What programs would you like to see at your local library?
Class Activity 2 (Group Activity)
In small groups, research the demographic and community profile of two of the following Local Government areas. Find out the population spread over a range of demographical areas such as age, employment status, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, ethnicity. Use other sources of information if necessary.Greater Dandenong Greater Dandenong Diversity
City of Casey
Bass Coast Shire
Frankston City
Mornington Peninsula Shire
City of Townsville
City of Darwin
Alice Springs Town Council
Based on this information, what programs do you think the library should run? Compare this with what they do run. Do the programs suit the demographic. Are the libraries meeting the needs of their community?

Event planning steps
Here are some of the important steps in planning and running an event:
I like to think of them as the "Who", "What", "When", "Where", "Why" and "How"
WHO is the target audience? WHO is the event designed for? WHO will come?
WHAT is the event? WHAT will the attendees be doing during the event?
WHEN will the event be held?
WHERE will the event take place?
WHY are we running the event? WHY will people attend?
HOW will you achieve the outcomes? HOW will you let people know about the event?
Here are a couple of articles that outline the event planning process:

Goals and Objectives
Setting goals and objectives help you to outline the purpose of your event and to provide you with a measure to determine whether the event was successful.https://www.gevme.com/blog/how-to-set-smart-goals-for-a-successful-event/

Class Activity 3 (Group activity)
Look at the following lists of events/programs from some local libraries.
What could be the goals and objectives for each of these programs? Select a couple of different events from each list. ** because of COVID-19 some events have been cancelled - you may need to look at PAST events or Events that are held via ZOOM or check out links to programs in other states **
External Influences
What external influences may impact on the programs or events that are currently running or in the development of new programs?
External influences could include:
- Changes in technology
- Current events
- Current or emerging community interests
- Legislation
- Programs in other institutions
- Social Trends
- Visitation patterns
- Economic climate
- Changes in Demographic/Culture
- ** a pandemic **
Class Activity 4 (Group Activity)
Using the same examples as Class Activity 3, what external influences could impact on the development of the programs?
Assessment Task - Plan, promote, develop, run, review an event(s).
If we have time - you can go into your groups and brainstorm some event ideas. The general theme is makerspace and you have some choices about your target audience:
An event for a particular group of students on campus - Cranbourne or a different campus
An event for staff
A general event in a campus library where anyone can attend
At this stage it is to just get some ideas. Make sure that you consider social distancing rules or other restrictions.
*** Make sure that you have a contingency plan in case there are further COVID restrictions ***
