Session 1 Introduction to events and programs
Introduction
When we attend a library event, what we are seeing is the product of weeks or maybe months of research and planning. Throughout this unit we will take part in events, organise events and run events. We will dissect the process of putting on library events, and assessing their success. Why run events?
Read the following article on Princh titled How can library events be used to reach out to the community?https://princh.com/how-library-events-reach-out-to-the-community/#.YPAgyegzbHg
Why do you think it is important for libraries to run events and public programs?
Class Discussion 1
Have you attended an event at a public library? What was it?
Types of Activities, Events or programs
Libraries run a variety of different events, activities and programs. Activities, Events and Programs could include any of these:
- ceremonies
- demonstrations
- excursions
- exhibitions
- festivals
- field trips
- guided tours
- holiday or weekend activities
- institution open days
- performances, such as:
- theatre
- film
- music
- dance
- craft demonstrations
- workshops
- presentations
- school programs
- scientific experiments
- site visits
- special occasions.
Themed Activities, Events or Programs
Many programs that are run through libraries are themed or based on a special event or day. Here are some links that have ideas that can be used when planning and running events:
Class Discussion 2
Read the article: Libraries program to help HSC students prepare for exams
What did you think of the idea?
Class Discussion 3
Have you ever attended an event at your local library? Why did you select that event? Did it meet your expectations? Why/Why not?
MakerSpaces
I was thinking that this year we could run a series of events centred around a MakerSpace.
So what is a MakerSpace?
Obviously we won't have a huge budget, but there are lots of lower cost makerspace activities.
STEM/STEAM
What are STEM or STEAM activities?
Class Discussion 5
Have you been to a MakerSpace event? What was it?
Do you have any ideas that could work for our own MakerSpace?
Assessment 1
Compare the activities, programs and events that are available at 2 different libraries. If there are lots to choose from, select 5 from each library. Your report should include:
- The name of each activity, program or event
- Description of the program or event
- How often is the event held
- How does the library promote the event
- Demographic or target audience for each event
- What you need to do to attend the event
- Is there any cost involved?
- Are the programs specific to the library's community
Full details available in the assessment guide.
Task to be uploaded to Dropbox OR shared via MS Office OR submitted via email.
** You may include events that are held online and/or recorded and streamed via YouTube or other social media applications **
